One thing we know for sure, the creative world is ever-changing. While the principles of design are a time-tested foundation for all artistic endeavors, trends rise each year and provide fresh ways to build new visual communication and enhance existing creative.

2021 was a year of laying foundations in a new world, and we expect 2022 will be a year of building and challenging the norms of design. According to insight from popular design resources like 99 Designs and Behance, we are looking forward to seeing the following design trends take shape this coming year:

90s + 2000s Nostalgia
While we move into a new year, the clocks are simultaneously moving backwards into the realm of nostalgic 90s and 2000s inspired designs. Bold colors and patterns, gradients, frames, and collages are hallmarks of these eras and add a hint of happy nostalgia to the designs they inhabit.

Experimental Typography
While there is value in the tried and true, a sure way to add visual interest to any design is through modified typography. Unique letterforms can be statement pieces that immediately catch the viewer’s eye to lead them into the rest of the design.

2D + 3D Design
Worlds are colliding with the rising trend of combining 2D and 3D elements. This collaboration can be implemented subtly or dramatically, depending on the approach and purpose, and provides another realm of design to explore and use for visual communication with maximum impact.

Hand-Drawn Elements
From grunge to doodles and crosshatching to dot patterns, we are anticipating seeing a surge in the integration of hand-drawn elements in graphic design. Whether used as bold, key pieces or subtle supporting elements, their use brings an endearing sense of humanity and warmth to any composition.

Breaking the Rules
As the pendulum has swung towards rigid systems and structures this past year, it is about to swing backwards into the realm of anti-design and rule breaking. In 2022, expect to see a rise in uncommon typographical pairings, color mixing, element modifying, and unconventional layouts.

We are excited to see these design trends used by creatives, marketers, and professional organizations to enhance their visual identity and build new ways of connecting, communicating, and creating.
